The Quarries
Tuscan Sandstone Quarries
The Nanni La Pietra Serena of Firenzuola Company S.r.l., uses lapidary material extracted from its own quarries in the surrounding area of Firenzuola in its factories. To this day, the quarries are generally excavated in areas situated far from urban development and in delimited zones to reduce negative impact on surrounding areas. The geological formation that provides Tuscan Sandstone offers accentuated reliefs and determines the progression of the quarries, which descend in terraces from the mountains toward the valley and, consequently, naturally forms the considerably high extractive walls, which also add to the suggestive setting of the area.

The areas in which the quarries are located today have been used for cultivation over the past few decades. Each layer is characterized by its own specific product qualities, which give it a certan variability that allows for the qualitative diversification of the final product.

The production of the quarry, which takes place simultaneously in three separate excavation sites, allows our company to provide a constant supply of all types of material, in order to guarantee an ample selection for the completion of various kinds of final products (external and internal cladding, pavement and flooring, etc.).

Quarry excavation takes place with the aid of modern machinery, among which the diamond wire saw, oleodynamic drills and excavators; furthermore, it is still necessary to use explosives to detach the individual blocks. These blocks are then cut to size, usually in regular parallelepipeds, from 6 to 8 cubic meters in volume, for a total weight of approximately 200 kg. each, which then get loaded onto trucks and transported to our company’s factory, where they undergo the process of cutting and sculpting.
